Do you guys think the nick at the top of this coin would affect grading ? I like this coin a lot, but also want to get it graded after I get it. Your comments appreciated !
The only nick on the coin is the one just above S in HANSESTADT that is pictured above. The whole nick is visible. It does not extend into the edge of the coin any further than what is shown.
I think this rim nick, together with that nick obverse 9:00 clock, would impact the grade one full grade down. It would be a MS64 without those injuries, so now a MS63......nice piece though.
Rheingold, could you take me through your analysis re:grading this coin? I've always been mystified by the sophistication of the grading process of high quality coins.
Love the design, could you direct me as to where I can find one at a fair price ? I did a quick search on EBAY and seen a couple, one was ms63, wanted $500, ouch. Thanks.
@laurentyvan First of all it's a coin of enormous size, so bag marks are quite common and furthermore it's a 900/1000 silver alloy which causes scratches while handling this coin. This coin is relatively free of marks and the high points are intact and not rubbed. These are pluses when it comes to the grading process. Strike seems to be average at least. The original luster is in my opinion not fully intact. There are areas which seem not original, for example near the mintmark. Plus the two rim nicks.....so a MS63.
I really appreciate that info. One more question. Which of these coins do you think would earn a higher grade. The one I posted first or this one ?
Both coins appear very different from each other....the second one looks like a first strike issue, with different problems than the first one; there are marks in the upper field obverse. Both coins are in the MS63/64 area, let the eye appeal speak to you.
Thanks a ton Rheingold. I like the first one more but they were similar in price and was considering value as well.
Buy the coin which you like most I always wonder how many German Empire coins found their way to the US. Especially coins in MS condition. Is there a solid market for them? In Germany you can buy truckloads in bad condition, but excellent coins remain rare.
I agree the nick may cost you a grade or half a grade, but I don't believe that it is bad enough to prevent it from grading and getting a details grade
