For example - NGC's sister company NCS will "conserve" coins and then pass them on to NGC for grading and slabbing. Obviously - these coins have been "cleaned" - but yet they are still graded & slabbed. And over the past 200 yrs there are literally millions of coins that have been cleaned by their owners at one point in time. But yet given time, these coins will re-tone and appear to have original surfaces. It all depends on the degree, or the harshness of the cleaning. These coins are also graded & slabbed by the grading companies.</p><p><br /></p><p>So - it is a matter of definitions and degree when it comes to cleaning & dipping a coin. Do it too much or too harshly - and the coin is ruined and deemed ungradeable.
