Quarters painted red.

My red penny is definitely not "normal" it is painted.

I have hundreds of circulated wheat cents and none of them have this color.

Yes! I have. I cannot quote the source but it is a story I have long known and repeated and goes like this..

In the days before commercial advertising was the norm, the proprietors of the traveling circuses would pass red painted cents to shopkeepers in the towns they were traveling to. If you received a red cent in your change then you knew the circus was coming to town.

Again, I cannot attest to the validity of this. I know it as a story I have shared as long as I can remember.
