Would you prefer the grade run below from 02 to 45 or a single AU example since the price is about the same?
The collector in me wants every one I can afford. The investor in me wants the best grade I can afford. I usually start out collecting(hoarding), then thin the herd and upgrade to quality. I'm not comfortable spending the big $$ until I'm confident I know what I'm doing.
If I wanted one, would be one very nice coin. Of course the fact that a grading set like this can be assembled shows that this coin is not than scarce. I have known specialist dealers to have as many as eight 1893-S dollars in stock.
I would rather have one high grade coin over a lot of lower grade ones. However it is nice to see the grade increases.
I'd take the grade set. It is a LOT easier to find multiple buyers for this coin in lower grades that to find the one collector with deep pockets who wants the AU.
I would take the graded set for sure. I would also sell off the XF45 and put that money away for something else. I’d then get the other two NGC in PCGS plastic for a well matched set graded from one TPG. Also agree the graded set would be easier to move if needed.
Assembling the run of 02 through 45 is relatively easy from an availability standpoint for '93-S (the availability of funds may a little more difficult). Try this with say '98-O.
If I were interested in spending that sorta money, I'd choose a single really nice example every time over an assortment of lower grade examples.
