Why would it be criminal to make the first and last 500 of a series and set them aside? Would every first and last manufactured be criminal and if so how would any coin ever be made? The market determined the price for them
Boy, wouldn't it be nice if the mint put aside a first or last of a series and held a raffle for all of it's registered customers. Oh, sorry, I was sleeping there a bit. Now, to get back to reality.
The mint. Which is legally required to recover all of the costs of manufacturing collector coins from the income from selling them. So $85,000 divided by total production will save you about 1 cent or less.
What does the anti mint crowd want exactly? The mint does a product where anyone can log in and buy it and there’s complaints, the mint does an unlimited mintage and no one cares because it’s overproduced “modern junk”, the mint does a special product where anyone can get it and there’s complaints, the mint does something special and holds an auction that anyone can bid on and now there’s issues with that too? Since there’s going to be complaints about the mint no matter what they do, they should just ignore them and keep doing special products that increase interest like all the other major world mints do (many of which the public has no chance to purchase except from dealers)
Well, of COURSE, what we want is for us to be able to get as many of an issue as we want, while not allowing others to buy so many that the issue "won't hold its value". I'm glad there were enough Apollo commemoratives to go around, and I don't particularly care that they haven't "gone up in the aftermarket". I haven't seen much that's grabbed me since then. I liked the designs of the platinum "Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness" platinum coins, but not enough to shell out for platinum (particularly not at, what, 50% over metal value?) I thought I was excited about the Morgan and Peace commemoratives until I saw what they actually looked like.
bb21, I know you've been around the park many times. Not insinuating you're old or anything , but I know you know the old saying, "You can please some of the people all of the time. You can please all of the people some of the time. But you can't please all of the people all of the time." I've come to believe this quote originated due to those people, me included, who've fallen out of favor with the US Mint.
Even though most ignore medals, the military medals theyve done the last two years have been very well done. It is a shame though that the 1 ounce version they went unlimited mintage on kind of making those destine to be bullion at some point. As a baseball fan the Negro Leagues dollar was a well done design, but there seems to be some big quality issues with them. The American Liberty silver medal strikes me as one of the best cases of if you over produce it no one cares. Many people wanted that when it was the gold but didnt like the price and now with the cheaper one 75k is just to high for a medal so it really killed the hype and hasnt sold out. Realistically though there have been more things in the last 2-3 years I've been excited to try and get even if I missed out than in the previous 8 or 9. I do wish they would change the design selection process but can appreciate they are at least trying to do some low mintage/exciting things here and there now
