TIF, it might be real, it looks like it might have been in a piece of jewelry and cut out, there are several places on the edge of this coin which could have held it in a pendent, i have a couple of modern silver coins that have been cut out of a pendent, have sprues like areas..

I don't know anything about the coin, so I can't comment on its authenticity, but you occasionally find pieces that were once part of jewelry, and show the evidence of it. Whether its "fine" or not depends first of all on whether the coin is original or a replica. If its the real thing, then you've got to decide for yourself whether the damage is acceptable in relation to your love of the coin and the price tag.

    TIF Always learning.

For some coins, I'm OK with them having been formerly mounted in jewelry (and cleaned, etc).

I wouldn't be OK with a cast replica unless I was knowingly purchasing it as such.

I'm still not convinced about the sprue issue with this coin. It's not a blob of solder, it's not damage from a prong. It is extra metal and given the striations, shape, and location it is a sprue. Whether or not it is from the flan's original manufacturing process or from it being a copy is the question.

There is also extra metal on the coin's obverse (left of the left-sided figure), not present on other coins of this issue. It is a relatively large amount and doesn't appear to be 'moved metal' from some setting process.

Tonight I'm going to search for more online information about the manufacturing process of these coins.

PS-- I bought a different coin of this type last night so my remaining interest in the OP coin is of academic interest now.
