Mostly in the second and third centuries AD, the Roman regions of Thrace and Asia minor minted alliance or homonoia coinage. These coins celebrated the union by placing the deity most associated with their cities on the reverse. Other types looked similar to provincial pseudo-autonomous coins. These are repeats from me but feel free to post any you have in your collection. Ionia, Smyrna. Marcus Aurelius AE32. Alliance with Laodicea in Phrygia. Very Cool!!! But like TIF, I seem to be lacking that 'provincial alliance'......losing a few of the type I did bid on this year.
Very nice coins. I love provincial coins, more variety in some ways than imperials. I never knew there was an "alliance" between these cities. They were all part of the empire weren't they? I always greet my friends with "ATTALOCCOFICTHCTAICPATPICI CMVP LAOD" when I have not seen them for a while. John
very nice coins, all 3 are sweet. big zeus with eagle = WIN bigger artemis with cool countermarks and cult statue of artemis = WIN. cult statue of artemis is HIGH on my list... that crazy polyboob thing is awesome! on the coins she is always holding some staves or something like that in her hands or a drapery of some type? a boule coin is also on my list!
Thanks to everyone for your positive comments! Yes, Roman cities in the regions of Thrace and Asia Minor. Ephesos, Pergamon and Smyrna are some of the more prevalent cities. RPC Online says "In total 87 cities issued ‘alliance’ coins, nearly 2,400 specimens of which are known today." I guess they are a little scarcer than I was thinking.
