    plastic case

thanks morgan. i will not open it. one more thing i want to ask you. why the mint did not use reuseable case?. what is their intention?. and the case seems easy to break or crack. what a bad quality case as compare to previous years. like 1973 - 1981 case and can be display?. and why so many people buying empty proof set case without coins?. what is the use?. i was so disappointed that one of the silver proof set case was cracked. is good that only 1 out of 76 set that i bought was cracked. these were from a coin dealer. and 11 set were from u.s. mint. all were alright.

Morgan-what year sets are you opening?

The reason that I ask is that I opened 2 US proof sets today and the 1969 set was sealed like you described, but the 2001 Silver set was just 2 pieces of well fitted plastic. When I had the coins out of the 2001 set I just fitted the plastic back together and stored the case away incase I ever need to sell the coin (I'll just reinsert them into the case).

That's what I wanna know. I haven't bought a Proof set in the past few years, but I did collect them for many years. And from the time they first introduced the hard cases in the '60s til after 2000 I never saw one that I couldn't just pop open with a knife and close it back up again

I haven't had the gahones to open any green sets or any of the newer sets ountill last Friday, two days ago, and I am sorry to say you are right they are not sealed. I am extreemly dissapointed!

I now wonder if I should direct-fit all my 1999-2005 sets. I do not want toning on these there are way too many of them out there for their own good and those that do not tone will be worth more. I can not believe the sets are not air tight or fraud resistant.

Well, I stand corrected and I will be really hesitant about buying with out COA and BOX from now on.

As far as proof sets from 1968 to at least 1987 they are sealed. You have to use something to pry them open and they are not recloseable. At least not without the glarring indication of damage.

I have cracked many a proof set. They are cheaper to buy than the individual coins. But as I said I have not cracked anything newer than 1987 yet except the 3-2005 sets I popped on Friday.

Morgan - I wouldn't worry about it too much. And I wouldn't change the coins out to Air-Tites either. They are no more airtight than the mint's holders are and will NOT stop the coins from toning. Only proper storage can help reduce toning. Consistent temperature, no light and no humidity.

    silver quarters

now that the silver is moving higher and higher. those silver quarters five piece set without sleeves or boxes cost around $20.00 per set retail miniumum. before it used to be around $14.00 to $15.00 per set. the set dated like year 2004.
