I bought this at a coin show for around $30. I noticed that the detail was relatively well struck and it looked like it could be a proof. I do not know much about identifying proof morgans. Can somebody help me?
Likely PL. The dies for the 1880 Proofs are known; the obverse has one pretty decent pickup (a die scratch at the border of hair and cheek) which you could use to confirm the die: http://www.vamworld.com/1880-P+VAM-13
The 80-S and 81-S are often mistaken for proof coins because they have some of the nicest strikes in the entire series. The PUP suggested by @SuperDave is the best way to identify the proof. Chris
