I bought this at a coin show for around $30. I noticed that the detail was relatively well struck and it looked like it could be a proof. I do not know much about identifying proof morgans. Can somebody help me?

Not a proof - looks like someone at the mint tried polishing the dies leaving the fields scratchy.

Likely PL. The dies for the 1880 Proofs are known; the obverse has one pretty decent pickup (a die scratch at the border of hair and cheek) which you could use to confirm the die:

The 80-S and 81-S are often mistaken for proof coins because they have some of the nicest strikes in the entire series. The PUP suggested by @SuperDave is the best way to identify the proof.

Ha! Never even saw the mint mark. :)

That kinda proves it's not Proof. :)

Agree, not a proof coin. Looks to be a nice 1880 S Morgan with possible PL.

If it is a proof, it has a high likelyhood of being cleaned at some time.
