I could probably write up some interesting stories about how MD Penny's got their exquisite look myself. Maybe I'll find a way to make $45k on a Half Dollar soon.

PLEASE tell me this is eBay and not an auction firm with a more solid reputation.

ha ya it just some moron on eBay. I ask for conversation on coins that match my eye. This chump goes straight to selling a Kennedy Half for $2500. It is nice but not even the $250 risk kind of nice

"Wisps of gold" is so last decade. We need words like "vermilion" or "bourbon" or "clover honey toned" to move the coin buyer of the twenty-teens.

Oh, okay, I EXPECT most eBay sellers to attempt to scam me. It's almost disappointing when they don't.

Regarding this one in particular- this would require two things to be true that are not in evidence. 1) All 1964 SMS Halves were in a single original packaging type that was used for nothing else. 2) All of them were kept in that packaging long enough to have acquired the telltale toning. Since neither is in evidence, we may label this claim "bull".

I myself recently sent to NGC a 1964 half that had spent obviously decades in a Whitman or Harris 2x3 snap case along with the 5-cent stamp issued for Kennedy's death. It had acquired multi-colored toning on both sides from the cardboard inside said snap case. It came back from NGC with a ridiculous to obscene high grade for the quality of the underlying coin, but I don't obviously have the "stones" some eBay sellers do.

Ha well you better throw it up on eBay for an instant 250% premium now then. It's crazy what toners realize at auction but again, the guys on eBay are selling MS63 Common Date Morgan's for $900. I get that they draw a crowd and all but you can't entirely put a premium that high on an 1896 Morgan just because it has a crescent tone from an album.

I thought of that first! RENT-A-COIN....what a cool business venture...you could be the envy of the industry!.... on the serious side, I seriously doubt that any new SPs will ever be found and maybe a couple of the documented are fakes. There were probably several which were melted in the silver rush.

Gotta agree there. I think that market is officially locked by only one TPG that will absolutely never designate another SP Coin. Depending on who submits it. If you guys come by one, I'll rent it...then RUNNN lol

A Rapper should buy it next time it auctions to encrust it in Diamonds to show off his "Swag"

This is such a cool topic, so I thru together a few stats. on a couple of Kennedys. The 64 SMS in finest known {pop 1} MS69 is a priceless unique coin.
    The 64 PF 69 UC {pop about 200 in 4,000,000 or 1 in25,000} is worth about $2,500.
The 65 SMS in MS 68 UC {pop about 30 in 2,360,000 or 1 in 79,000} is worth about $30,000. In MS 69 CAM in finest known {pop 1} is also a priceless unique coin.

SMS coins in the finest grades are some of the HOTTEST coins from the 20th Century as compared to the finest known PF versions. Many collectors underestimate the the conditional rarity of SMS coins. They,re tops on my list!

Actually that is some very interesting knowledge now that you brought it up. Highly underrated to this day just because of their failure in the 60's. I guess we'll be competing while they're still $15/set now! I wonder if there's a snowballs chance in hell of still finding an MS68 in an SMS Set out there..

Where'd you get the value of $30k on a 1965 MS68 !? Last I saw it was around $250, still looks to be around $250

Even the MS68 Cameo SMS is $2500 which is great but we know those have been picked. Maybe another 30 years or so and we'll see $30k

I said MS68 U CAM...Just look up the pops and price guides. Good luck locating one for sale...Kinda like digging for a pot of gold! I don,t waist my time trying to find one, but if one jumps at me I,ll take it. You should study the available info on any coin you plan on finding, it will save you a ton of lost time and money if you know the facts. A few dealers are savvy on this series, but a Lot are not. Be careful!

Jim, do you have a copy of "a guide book of Franklin and Kennedy Half Dollars" by Rick Tomaska? Read it several times and you will become familiar with the Kennedy series.

No I don't have a copy. I've never been super interested in Franklin or Kennedy Halves enough to buy it. I was unaware there are MS68 dcams out there for 1965's so I can imagine it's a nice one. The Franklin's have never appealed to me and any 40% Kennedy's worth that much would quickly leave my hands for auction as well

I do own a few PR68 DCAM/UC 40% Kennedys, but no 1965's. Two of them I had certified from raw. Does a MS68 DCAM have the same look as a PR68 DCAM, or not?

No... the set of 68s I own are not in D CAM. They look like really nice SMSs though,as they should. Mine are all Brilliant. My nicest CAMs are 67s in SMS. I wouldn,t pay that kind of money for 68 D CAMs or even 67 D CAMS... they,re just too rare for my pockets. I also have a few 68, and 69 D CAM 40% PR Kennedys, but those SMS,s in D CAM are too rich for my blood.
