Many moons ago, sometime during 2012, I sent some ATB quarters off to NGC for grading. These are just some of the results. Population: 1 Population: 1 Population: 1 No other of these particular coins have been graded Proof Like by NGC. I know that they are only worth what someone might pay, but I'd like to get some opinions. Thanks for your input.
I think its a gimmick on the grading company, same company that put proof-like on the 2015-D Shield Cent . What will they think of next, DMPL .....
Why would you call that a gimmick? MS coins cannot be of such quality to appear proof like? NGC does MSDPL, too.
I am expressing the opinion of that portion of the numismatic community that won't pay a premium for a shiny modern mass produced ATB quarter in a plastic box. I'd wager that there are a lot that think this way. Wasn't offering you anything for your coins.
Here's another big gimmick, 5oz. silver, some were labeled with " Special Finish " which was the starting of the new finish of the 5oz ATB . First year out too ....
Reflectivity is reflectivity. If it reflects 12pt newspaper type for 4-5", it's Prooflike regardless of the denomination. If it isn't, the designation doesn't belong there. The answer to this coin's worth lies in the number and commitment of people collecting the series. There are bazillions of 1921 Morgans, but a PL one is worth quite the premium. If the ATB collector base is that energized, you can expect a substantial premium for these.
I have a role of S-Mint business strike Great Basin's that are so PL, they look like they were struck with old proof dies (probably were). Many of the 2012's look like they'll be the keys to the series, with mintages in the 20M's for circulating coins.
I'm not interested in that portion of the community. You couldn't take the question as it was intended?
That's Morgan Dollar territory, and low enough with circulation attrition that it's reasonable to expect them to become pretty scarce in high grade down the road. If I were into Moderns I'd be busting my butt to hoard Business Strikes above MS66. It's already apparent that there are some pretty serious Condition Rarities of that type in the Modern arena, and it's reasonable to expect the 2012's to follow suit.
