Hello everyone, I’d like to get some opinions on what the grade on this proof Barber quarter may be. I’m standing by with a microscope as well if you’d like to see a larger image of a given area.
Here’s a picture of the reverse above “states” it looks like a heavy rim ding in the original photograph, but it’s discoloration.
+1 Cleaned and dipped as well....look around the stars and devices... dead give away for toned and cleaned.
Looks plated or polished to me, but then working from photos is never the best way to tell. Who labeled this a PROOF?
Thanks for all your responses, I’ll upload some new pictures when I get home. The coin dealer I bought it from labeled it a proof. I guess that would be a big question, and there seems to be some division based on all the responses received so far. Is this a proof or a business strike coin? It was sold as a proof and I personally believe it’s a proof. I agree that it looks cleaned and also either polished or dipped.
Everyone, thanks for your help with this coin. The question from me at this point is, is this a proof strike?
I went to a coin show over the weekend and brought this coin, and a dealer there told me it’s a proof and it’s been cleaned.
It doesn’t look proof to me. Even an impaired Barber proof quarter would have some retained mirrors. I’m not seeing any on this coin.
I think you are getting fooled by a polished coin. The surfaces look nothing like a proof to me. Here is a certified PR 64+ Barber Quarter. I see nothing in the surfaces, rims, or strike that resembles this coin from the OP’s coin. That one is a polished high AU or MS coin.
You may be right. But I think if you polished the coin you just posted, it would look a lot like the OP's coin. The rims on the OP's coin still look more like proof rims to me than any MS rims I've seen. I haven't spent nearly as much time as I'd like looking at Barber proofs, so I'm not the one to listen to here. But I do think the OP's coin looks like a polished proof.
