This is my second addition to my Probus Lugdunum collection in 2019 making me hope that it is going to be an above average year for my collection. The Abundantia type is typically produced by Officina 4 at Lugdunum. The emission 4 examples from this officina are quite common with Bastien citing 54 examples with dots in the obverse legend and a single example without dots. Obv:– IMP C PROBVS • P • F • AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right Rev:– ABVNDANTIA AVG, Abundatia, standing right, empting cornucopiae Minted in Lugdunum (IIII in exe) Emission 4 Officina 4. Middle to End A.D. 277 Reference:– Cohen 1. Bastien 195. RIC 17 Bust type F I was aware that there is a single die that identifies the coin as coming from officina 1. This might just be a single die produces at this officina or an engraving error and stumbled across an example in a mixed lot. I bought the lot just for this coin and will figure out how to flip the others. Obv:– IMP C PROBVS • P • F • AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right Rev:– ABVNDANTIA AVG, Abundatia, standing right, empting cornucopiae Minted in Lugdunum (I in exe) Emission 4 Officina 1. Middle to End A.D. 277 Reference:– Cohen 1. Bastien 183 (2 examples cited, British Museum and Pflaum collection). RIC 17 Bust type F var (not listed for this officina) Reverse die match to both examples is Bastien. No examples on Wildwinds or probvs.net. Weight 3.02g. 23.56mm. 180 degrees An uneven strike means that part of the obverse and reverse was not struck up. There are unfortunately some cleaning scratched deep in the field in front og the bust but I can live with it. Bring on 2019. Martin
I don't have anything relevant to share, but that portrait on the first coin is very nice with great detail on the reverse.
