Just guessing but because of the proof minting process they’d be more likely in mint sets. How likely, who knows?
Not really something that anyone can put a number or percentage on. Good knowledge of the minting and packaging process for these types of coins dictates that error coins will be a lot fewer and harder to find. Due to the process used to make proof coins you would think that error coins would be a zero % release rate, but it is not. 1972-S Proof Eisenhower Dollar, Struck Through Foreign Object.
Sum1 posted an epic clash on the W mm dime that they found in a mint set. An outstanding find, its somewhere in the error forum,I wish I had saved pictures.I'd say your chances are just as good as anything elce, just gotta look
I have a 2016-w Gold Mercury Dime with a Red Spot still in OGP , is that a incorrect planchet mix error ? Should I keep it that way or send it in for certification ? I hadn't thought about it being an error coin I was just disappointed in the Red Spot all this time , I never find an error coin or I miss them .
Over a period of about 20 years during which I ordered Mint products totaling approximately $6K per year, I found just three coins that were Mint errors. The first was the 2001-D Kennedy half dollar missing the clad layer. The 2005-S KS Silver Proof SQ with a Die Dent, FS-901 in the CPG as a variety..... …..and a second 2005-S KS Silver Proof SQ with a lamination error under LIBERTY. Chris
Given the inspection regimen for proof coinage at least, I assumed errors would be close to impossible. Then I received a 2003 Silver Proof Set with a doozy! Somebody was clearly asleep at the switch. As for mint sets... I always put them under the glass.
To me, in my quest....my own personal experience....its 100%! I bought one mint set and got one verified DDO and a possible 2nd. One set 100% lol! Thats what is called crazy luck and I would guess that I had a better chance of getting struck by lightning the day I got that mint set.
Gladly. I'll retrieve it from the safe deposit box on Monday and ask for my children's posting assistance. Several years ago, it (the Missouri quarter) was featured in "Numismatic News." I've been reluctant to break the holder and submit it for TPG so would appreciate guidance from the CT community.
Great. Just remember to create your own separate unique thread. Create it over at the Error Coins forum. We would love to see what you have.
The red spot actually was a common problem with the gold commem coins that year. You can search it as we had discussions here on CT about it. Edit Try this thread https://www.cointalk.com/threads/copper-showing-in-gold-coin.101076/page-2
