Star, plus, the toning and even the black retro-holder will command a premium but not much higher than 64 list price in my opinion. It's still a common year S Morgan and there are too many nice toners available.

Not much of a points bump for the +* combo on this coin. Maybe 30 points. I have a registry, but when looking at NGC * coins, I'm assessing them for the eye appeal, not the points. But that's just me. I can't speak for others on this subject.

I have a couple or so of plusses and a couple or so of plus grades. How do some of you guys price those?

When viewing a "+" grade for purchase, I typically will pay a premium over the "straight" grade. There are so many possible scenarios that it's hard to just say I would do exactly "x".

For example, what if the price for one grade higher is a 3x or greater jump in price? What if the jump is nominal? What if I really like the "skin" of the coin?

So IMO, I think a "+" grade means it's an "A" coin for the grade. I do pay for quality. Even if a coin does not have the "+" on the label, but I've decided it is an "A" coin, I'll pay the premium. Clear as mud?

Terminal is terminal no matter how the pics are taken. I agree the purple & red may pop a bit better in hand but it won't be like, or compare to, the double sided $300 toner you posted in terms of color. That's a multi banded 2nd to 3rd stage and the op coin is a definate 4th almost 5th stage. Still nice, and a crecent but in terminal stage nonetheless and the retro slab is just highlighting that fact imho

I'm not knocking this coin, I like it. I'm just being technical :pompous:

And what exactly is it that you think my view of toned Morgans is ?

I love attractively toned Morgans. But it is my opinion that particular coin is not attractive at all.

Could you take a picture to make the colors be more flattering ? Yeah, probably. But I think that picture posted by the OP is what the coin looks like in hand.

Sounds like NGC is stealing business away from CAC...?

Funny you say that, there are some calling to decimalize the Sheldon system. Wait, unless you already knew that and were being sardonic lol

Many of you are much more expert then me, but I really like Morgans, have bought a good number thru' the years. Frankly, I don't see anything about this coin that I would pay a big premium for. I really think if I was gonna pay, say, $150 on an 81S I could easily find one I like better. But a registry guy might think different. Or maybe the toning is better than what I'm seeing . Just my 1 cent.

Well, they're saying it will pay at a higher market grade. That's how I see it. You want to make it an even more eye-appealing label, send it to CAC. They'll Green it, might even Gold it. They won't reject a +*.

An 81-s is very common. And very common with great toning. To me this is a $150 coin. For me to even consider spending major money for a 79-81-s Morgan I want off the charts color and preferably a 64 or better

I agree-- I love toned Morgans, and have a substantial collection of them, as many know. I do pay extra for really nice color, and I do not worry that much about the grade when it comes to toners. The ones I own range in grade from 62-66, and most average 63-65. In no case did I pay more than 2x greysheet for any of them-- I shopped carefully, and looked around. However, I still think that the OP's coin is attractive enough, and for a slab collector, unique enough for it to go at least as high as the example I posted from eBay of the 81s. Would I buy it. NO. I wouldn't buy it at any price, as I have much nicer examples of that date and mint. However, someone who wants a low pop slab would, and I see that coin going for more than many might expect. Once again, it isn't a coin that would interest me-- my toners are more special in my opinion. However, there's a market for everything.

I find the one from feebay far superior. The op coin I don't find particular attractive I've paid huge premiums for color I bought a ms 63 80-s for almost $1k. But the color was amazing.
