Wow. Makes the $5 or so I paid for a 1919KN Penny pale on comparison. Then again, all of the coins mentioned above wouldn't go with the rest of my collection anyway.
The most I have paid for a coin was NZ$200 for a contemporary jeweller's copy of the famous Sammy Marks Tickey - the gold Kruger 3d. of the South African Republic, which is dated 1898 & struck only in gold. The jeweller's copy lacks the stops in the 'Z.A.R.' monogram at the top of the coin.I bought it off a friend in the numismatic trade in 2003. Think it may have been cleaned a long time ago but as for fake neither of my two favorite local dealers thinks so. Will get it slabbed some day (probably by ANACS) and if it DOES come back as fake me and the guy that I bought it from are very good friends. I'm sure he'd make it right.
I think this post made me realize something. I'm really getting to old for this or any hobby. The reason is I remember saying not long ago to someone, somewhere that until a few weeks ago I seldom ever spent more than $100 for any coin or coins at one time. Then not long ago at a coin show I spent close to $2000 and I actually can not remember what I bought. Scarry isn't it.
probaly my 1896O morgan i bought for $18. its not uncirculated, but its not that worn. i don't spend alot of money on coins. instead of buying one expensive coin, i would rather buy a bunch of common coins. ex.(1909S vbd, or a bunch of morgan dollars.):kewl:
My proof Silver Eagle collection 1986 - 2004 (purchased a few years ago). Not including the 1995W though. Could have got the Ten Year Anniversary set for around $3K at the time. Now that I see it at $5K+, I wish I had picked that up too. Other than that it would have been a gold eagle.
That is scary and I'll try and remember that. I don't attend a lot of shows but when I do it's usually at least $500 or so for three or four coins. At THIS point I can remember what I bought though. When I can't I'll just tell my wife to pull the plug.
$686 for the '06 buffalo gold. Sure was a nice addition to the herd I don't think I'll buy the '07 (or future for that matter) buffalo unless they decide to come out with the fractionals.
I don't have any really expensive coins in my collection. The most I ever paid for a single coin is $360 for an 1882 $10 Gold Eagle slabbed by NGC as MS-61.
Expensive is a relative term isn't it? You paid $360 for a Beautiful coin while others are paying over $500 for 2007 Washington and Adams "errors". I'd take your coin over those ANY day.
Silvereagle, that is one lovely hammered English gold coin.I could never afford to buy one of those, but then again, you won't find them in New Zealand. The only New Zealander that I knew who had anything like this was my late friend,W.H. (Bill) Lampard,F.R.N.S.N.Z.,whose collection was sold at auction in early 2005,just over 3 months after his death from cancer. Aidan.
