You can search for his other posts. If he has participated to your liking for a long time that is evidence that the transaction will go well. I think the moderators would hear about it if a previous transaction had not.

I most certainly do not expect any protection or anything from CT management but I do feel a bit of such protection from CT. I might have coins to sell or want to buy and would not consider dealing with a complete stranger but I have 'known' some of the CT regulars through their posts for several years. I have never laid eyes on Bing or TIF or Randy or Medoraman or Zumbly or several others here but have read enough of their posts to feel comfortable with them. These are not strangers. At any given moment each of us may have a coin or two that we can spare but I am not interested in listing mine for open sale to just anyone who might respond to an ad so I miss sales. Similarly, I don't buy from just anyone who has a coin. The danger here is not CT ad space but dealing with strangers. I'm much more inclined to send money/coins to anyone on my list above than to some big name four letter word European auction house that has cheated me before. I wish there were a way for those of us in the CT family to know what we each have to spare so we might find trades without openly advertising that exposes us to the people GDJMSP knows to be a major part of Coin Talk reality. There is not. While I appreciate CT as a second rate coin club substitute, I really do wish we could all meet in person and do our trading in the old fashioned way. We can't. The best we can do is pay a dealer to buy and sell on our behalf and assume certain risks that are part of his cost of doing business or stick to the people we know one way or another from past experience.

Maybe, but then again maybe not.

And we do from time to time. It was a recent episode of exactly that which prompted me to post the warnings I posted. And even then only after years of considering doing so.

What Doug said is the key - there is little risk in doing business with people you know and trust. And no you don't have to have met people face to get to know and trust them. But just because somebody has posted on the forum for a while that doesn't mean that you know them, nor does it mean you should trust them. Getting to know and trust somebody, well there's more to it than that. And I think all of you know that, you deal with it every day in your lives. From among all the people around you there are those you would trust and there are those you just wouldn't.

It works the same way here. There are plenty of members on this forum that I would trust and do business with them, there's quite few that I have done business with. But it's not them that you have to worry about, and it's not them that those warnings apply to.

If and if you don't know them but want to do business with another member, there's a pretty simple solution - all you have to do is ask ! Simply post your question and ask the forum membership for references. And you'll either get them or you won't. But I would only pay attention to references from people you already do know and trust. And I say that because there are bad people on this forum - they do exist. And they will rip you off if given the chance.

But remember this - no one, absolutely no one, can ever take advantage of you unless you allow them to do so.

I've had nothing but good results dealing with other regulars here. I know they would not intentionally hurt me because I've gotten to know them well, and I know they are avid ancients collectors just like me, looking to have fun and share in the hobby with others here. Likewise, I've never intentionally hurt anyone here. Every coin I've sold or given away was a coin which I honestly believed to be genuine based on my research and experience, plus based on the reliable sources I got it from and second opinions I've had from others. And I've never tried to scam anyone else, in fact, I've lost small amounts of money trading here as I want to give others a good experience....but I don't do this hobby to get rich but rather because I enjoy it, so the experience was worth far more than a few extra bucks.

I understand the concerns about coin talk not giving any guarantee, and I understand every transaction done outside of an auction house or dealer setting carries a risk...caveat emptor (buyer beware). But with some of the regulars here that is a risk I'm willing to take as Ive gotten to know them as well as anyone can know anyone here, and know they are just small time collectors just like me doing it for the fun of the hobby and not to pray on others. So I'm willing to take the risk knowing that I can unintentionally get burned....which I could deal with far better than knowing I was intentionally burned by some scammer on eBay. Mistakes happen amongst well intentioned amateur collectors. At least I know and trust the likes of JA, Mat, cucumbor, red_spork, Smojo, and others here to know they are honest people just having fun and doing their best in this hobby, just like me. And that's all that matters.
