Buchanan thought that the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision would settle the slavery issue. It only made it worse. The jist of the court's ruling was that African Americans were not citizens and had not right bring a suit before the court system. Buchanan had one of the best resumes that any president has had. He had been a member of the House of Representatives, a Senator, Ambassador to England and Russia and Secretary of State. This medalet advised voters that "The crisis demands his election."
