Presidential Dollars versus Half Dollars

Depicting ALL of the U.S. Presidents on future dollar coins is a bad idea, here's why:

    1. It could become very political as various groups will favor or shun certain presidents.

    2. It continues to elevate presidents on coinage, when most collectors and others agree that the ideals of liberty and America's greatness are best portrayed on our coinage. Most of these presidents would turn in their grave if they knew they had been "idolized" on coins like the monarchs and rulers of the past. It goes against Washington's vision. It will make the United States look no differant than other "banana republic" coins...who have to put their mugs on obverses to tell the popluation who is in charge...for the moment.

    3. The series will be forever incomplete. Our nation will continue to elect presidents long after this series ends.

    4. The first lady coins will be too difficult to obtain for the average collector and first ladies were NOT even elected to office. Hillary and Bill could eventually be on BOTH of these coins...think about it!

Rep. Castle should consider revising this legislation for designs depicting the ideals of liberty, freedom, and America's greatness as a nation. OR, he should propose one design that doesn't feature any living person, but rather a modernized conceptual design of national pride, liberty and freedom.

After all...do you want to see Presidents like Fillmore, Harding, Harrison, Taft, etc. depicted on dollar coins? Let's call a spade a spade...no dollar coin is going to work unless the paper dollar bill is eliminated. Canada and Europe eliminated their paper dollar bill and sure enough, they quickly adopted.

But that is unlikely to happen in the U.S. because we would rather spend $500 million per year (the cost to produce $1 bills) for a product whose life span is only around 16 months. How long would a dollar coin last? 30, 40, 50 years?? Sure it may cost more per unit initially to produce, but the dollars saved in the immediate long term would be staggering.

Who wants us to spend all of this money producing $1 bills??...the banking and paper industry.

So whatever dollar coin we design (hopefully NOT all of the presidents), it will fail just like the Peace, IKE, SBA and SAC dollar coins unless Americans do not have a choice between metal or paper.

The bill also has a provision mandating that all government agencies and FDIC banks actively distribute the coins. I still think it will take elimintaion of $1 bills to make the coins circulate.
Personally I would like to see this done and when the program ends........no more presidents on our coins

No offense to anyone, but this is reason enough for me to take up arms to oppose this legislation.

Rep. Castle seems to be active in coin realted issus and he is not afraid to propose legislation. Maybe we need to convince him to support OUR issues. Then we would have an active ally. I suggest people start sending their ideas to him.

Wow, parts of what Midas posted almost sounds like word for word a letter I sent to Rep. Castle several months ago. Especially points one through four, or the first part of four.

Anyway, I never heard back from Rep. Castle's office.

I have read a number of threads/posts over the year and I am, again, justifying why presidents on dollar coins is a BAD idea. If I used your previously posted arguments, it is because I totally agree with them. They were concise and well thought out. Many times, topics like this get brought up again and again over a year's time and if an topic was well argued in the past, there is no reason why it shouldn't be offered again. If this was your letter to Rep. Castle...kudos to you. I hope you don't mind that I posted your main talking points again because they were right on.

BTW...Rep. Castle never responded to me either and I even had my letter delivered via courier service.

Oh, no problem. I don't mind at all, and am flattered actually. I was thinking it was a huge coinicidence, :) Anyway, I'm glad we agree on this issue. I was hoping for a response from their camp, but oh well. Thanks again.

BTW...anybody know Rep Castle's (Delaware) phone number?

A "few" calls from us numismatics may hopefully make him think before he acts.
