The law specificly saiys that no living President may be depicted, and requires any president shown to have been dead at least two years. It doesn't say anything about the First Lady having to be dead and since there is no law that forbids a living person from appearing on a US coin I think they should be issued with the living, or fresh dead, First Lady on them.

Historically, no living person may be protrayed on a US coin or currency. This was a reaction to an individual (I forget his name, but I am sure that someone will add the info) who put his own likeness on a fractional currency note.

We all know that this is not a total ban, since Eunice Shriver was on the Special Olympics coin.

Additionally, the States quarters law specifically bans teh use of living persons:
    TITLE 31 > SUBTITLE IV > CHAPTER 51 > SUBCHAPTER II > § 5112
§ 5112. Denominations, specifications, and design of coins

    (E) Prohibition on certain representations.— No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design of any quarter dollar under this subsection.

    So, dead presidents prevail.

I could get into a huge discussion on the hopefully-not-to-happen-at-all mrs president clinton, but that would be off-topic. Anyway, thanks for setting me straight on the Presidential dollars.

    And I agree.

    Interesting topic and digression.

I will keep a few of the prez coins. I like the idea of words on the edge as the usual reeding. Too bad there is no gold or silver in the coin. I will only have them from the mint uncirculated set and the silver proof set though. Those should fair well in the not too distant future.

It's interesting to note that the word "liberty" will not be on the coin, and that for the first time, no eagle will be on the reverse of a dollar coin. Congress must have changed the regulations, as all coins made of silver and gold were required to have an eagle on the reverse. Obviously the state quarters were an exception, but losing the eagle is odd.

Ok, I got my COIN WORLD and just read all about the dollars.

WHERE ARE THEY PUTTING THE WORD "LIBERTY" on the coin?!?!? I noticed this was convienently eft off the coins. I don't see it on the reverse. And I could have sworn the word "LIBERTY" was, by law, to be on all Obverses of coins.

$%^%#^&#%^@%$^&*(@#$% My congressman and senators are getting letters, faxes, and phone calls, from me, tomorrow!

This has been discused several times on the forum. The Deadpres law states that the large depiction of the Statue of Liberty on the reverse is an adequate representation of the concept, and expressly exempts the Deadpres coins from the statute requiring the word on all coins.

Congress and Dubbya apparently agree that it is the concept that is important, not the manner of expressing it. The subsitution of the statue for the word, along with moving other legends and the mint mark to the edge, is all isupposed to make more room on the faces for impressive artwork. It probably won't have that result, but they are trying.

I am so ****ed off about this decision. I just read the official mint statement of it.

    Unacceptable.

I am going to have to run, and win, election for Pres myself to FIX all this crap the MINT has done.

I am just upset that the mint left "In God We Trust" on the coin. It is time for that to be removed.

I suspect there is an unspoken behind the scenes long term plan to radically change the style of US coinage to remove all of the traditional national symbols such as "Liberty" or "In God We Trust" or the eagle. International commerce is so integrated these days that something a little more cosmopolitan probably seems appropriate to the powers that be. 20th century coinage differed substantially from 19th, and 21st will probably differ greatly from 20th. We'll probably eventually have the "Global Warming Dime" and a United Nations commemorative dollar. The word "liberty" could be replaced by "sustainablility."

I see "LIBERTY" being replaced with: "tolerance" or "acceptance". This would be represented by a graphical depiction of something out of South Park
Understand CoinTalkers, I fear not what man can do unto me in the pursuit of getting this word added back. My campaign starts in ernest, today.

Liberty and In God We Trust will be on the edge of the coin.

It's a coin that no one will use and will only end up being hoarded but middle America and find it's way into thousands of dusty coin albums for all eternity.

Liberty and In God We Trust isn't going anywhere.

You really seem unusually attached to this word. It's just a word. To be fair, lets make room for other words. Give them equal time. Let's see; We've used Sacagawea, Susan, we've used the heck out of Liberty, in god we trust and E Pluribus Unun, and now we need a word that truely represents what this country has come to stand for...How about "Opulence". There is a fine word for the new coins.

"Liberty" will not be on the edge of the coin. Read earlier in the thread and check the US Mint website. The Statue Of Liberty represents the ideal of liberty so the word will not be included on the coins.

Don't blame the MINT. They can only Do what Congress and the President tell them to do.

LIBERTY is not on the edge. Go check the Mint's pics of the edge. E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST are on the edge.
