Well, I got a few rolls of these yesterday and I have to say that I'm pretty much underwhelmed by them. As usual, the Mint has created yet another coin with very shallow relief and no "basining" whatsoever. Just run your finger over the designs - you can barely feel them. The Washington obverse is rather dull-looking and the lettering is nothing spectacular (especially the tiny lettering under the portrait). The Statue of Liberty reverse is fine except for the "$1" designation. I think it makes the coin look like a token. The edge lettering is a nice touch, but most of the coins I've seen are very marked up. I passed a few of these out yesterday for purchases. Most people just thought they were a SAC Dollar and didn't look twice. There was one girl who noticed it was different, gave it second glance then immediately dropped it in the cash drawer. I read somewhere that the Mint was using a new rinse on the coins to keep them from turning ugly in circulation like the SACs do. Well, after just a few hours in my pocket and a little bit of handling, they began to lose their luster and take on that "SAC sheen". I think these coins are going to be a dud. I had high hopes for them, but so far I'm disappointed.
Why not mandate all of the vending machines having to take the coined dollars. That would force people to use them and the feds could slowly phase out the paper saving Joe Tax Payer some money that they can put into another entitlement program for the illegal's that are here.
Most (if not all) vending machines already take the dollar coin. That is why the presidential dollar coins have the same alloy combination as the sacs.
I never knew that. I wonder how many other people are in the dark about the machines accepting the coin or would they be afraid of putting a dollar coin into the machine and losing it.
