Any graded good. They cost more to grade than the value it's such a shot in the dark what you do sometimes.
It was a dealer who worked for SilverTowne, and it happened several years ago. I just thought it was amusing. At the time, I was trying to sell an ICG-graded 1894 silver dollar, and none of the dealers I showed it to wanted it. Cleaned was the reason. I finally did sell it but lost money on it. I seem to remember that I had gotten it from Heritage. I have no clue how many dealers I've dealt with face-to face, but it's quite a few, beginning in the late 1970s. You have convinced me to stop using the quip about ICG, and I fully expect that you have more experience with dealers than I do.
It is quite impressive. I saw it the first time it went out in 2019 and it's going through my area again in late August this year so I'll be watching it again... https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm
Insane coin grade Interesting commercial grade It's correct grade Insane crazy grade Insanely crappy grade Instant cool guess Insane crappy guess Actually, I don't mind the "I can't grade" joke myself because of the economic reasons many dealers parrot it. It is free advertising. We are swamped with work having to hire three new employees + two part-mime workers in the last year DURING the China Virus slowdown in the coin market. I just chose to respond to this very old quip because most small to medium local dealers don't have a clue and especially because there have been many cases of fakes and large numbers of grading errors in ALL TPGS slabs. Unfortunately, due to the huge volume of coins passing through the top two services, they are the biggest offenders! PS I've been watching the videos of the Big Boy. I was a train chaser in my younger days. The Freedom Train engines were parked in Alexandria for awhile.
Nice. I live in Portland, OR where the SP4449 lives. I go down and see it in the museum a few times a year and we ride it each winter as part of a Christmas event they do. It’s awesome.
It's funny you mention SilverTowne, I believe now Silver City Auctions. I buy coins from their auctions now and then. They typically overgrade the raw coins in their catalog. In fact, many of their higher grade raw coins have probably been cleaned. I know since a good percentage of the ones I sent to NGC or PCGS came back details. I've become very careful in bidding on their raw lots; especially IHC and LWC.
No Anacs is one of the 4 TPG accepted by EBay. Their grading good as anybody. I don’t discount my Anacs coins bc of some holder game nonsense and neither should you.
@CamaroDMD It will be on the move starting Aug 5th, the closest stop to me is New Orleans, La. only 1359 miles from me. But there is one at Steam Town in Scranton, PA on display that was just cosmetically restored. https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm
Boy do I feel stupid! I must apologize for the error in a previous post. I wrote the following: "If this member (@Mike Thorne) is the published numismatist, Mike Thorne, he appears to be seriously uninformed and living in the past concerning the subject of TPGS's but I will give him credit for at least knowing that ICG actually exists." This morning, I read this quote in a column written by Mr. Thorne, Ph.D. published in Numismatic News: "On the other hand, if you have a lot of coins worth more than $100 apiece, then you might consider having them certified by a major certification service. By major services, I'm referring to ANACS,NGC, and PCGS." Apparently, in a column purporting to help collectors ,Mr. Thorne has either shown his personal bias or is truly ignorant of the fact that ICG is considered to be one of the four major grading services. Hopefully, in future columns, a well known numismatist with his credentials will do some research so he can do a much better job dispensing both correct and useful information to his audience.
I've had the same experience with Charter Oak Coins auctions in CT, and I was amused when I bought two SLQs and they looked very similar in quality to me (online auction - photos) for the same price $125 each raw, and the 1929 came back from ICG MS63 FH (yay!), and the 1924 was AU53 Details, Cleaned. [sad trombone]. For me it's all part of the learning process.
Hey I have a few of those. Maybe 3or4. If I find them I’ll pass them on to you. I think mine have holes in them. I also have a few of those bank of Canada kind. We’ll see if I can find. I don’t save them
