To some extent the exchange rates may affect the catalog prices - the Krause is a catalog (well, several volumes) for collectors in the US, with prices in US dollars. Well, one euro for example was $1.17 almost ten years ago, went down to $0.85, then up to almost $1.60, and now we're at $1.49 ... Another possible reason, and probably more important, is that in countries such as Russia, India or China there are people who are able and willing to spend quite a lot on coins.
