One of many I'll be submitting tomorrow. What do you grade it, and what do you think ANACS will grade it? All images are the same coin, just different types of lighting -
I would agree with @ToughCOINS, although I think ANACS may give it an AU-Details grade. AU-50 Details to be more specific. ANACS likes to give numerical grades even for Details coins.
AU 50 Details - Environmental Damage I would give it the same grade and say this is an attractive example for a details coin.
Maybe could get an AU50 details at ANACS but some coins they are stricter on, and I do not have any idea on this series.
*****UPDATE***** I got the results today. AU-50 - Altered Surfaces Now what exactly do they mean by "Altered Surfaces"? I have no definitive answer, but my guess would be they felt the toning was unnatural? Would this be a candidate for a quality dip or a conservation by NGC, or will this always be a details coin?
Nice grade, I don't know much about this stuff but I would say details due to light cleaning. Thanks, Jacob
Can you send pics of the holder? I bet altered surfaces because it looks like it was very lightly cleaned and then retoned. So instead of saying Cleaned, Retoned, they just said altered.
Technically cleaning can be considered a form of altering the surfaces. I am guessing that they thought the surfaces were not natural but couldn't pin down the exact reason, thus the catch-all of "altered surfaces".
By the way, here is what NGC says: "ALTERED SURFACE is a general term used to describe a coin whose surfaces are clearly not natural but whose exact treatment is uncertain. Among the deceptive processes that fall into this category is the application of pastes to either hide contact marks or to simulate Cameo frosting or Prooflike brilliance." https://www.ngccoin.com/pdf/details_grading_brochure.pdf
It looks like someone tried to smooth a scratch right behind the end of the tail on the reverse. Maybe not, put the first images give it that look. Pretty coin anyway.
