1988-D As I post these raw nickels I try to complete the corresponding entry in my inventory spreadsheet. I put in the number of the CoinTalk post where I show them, a link to the NGC site for population data, and a guess at a grade and value. For these 1980's business strikes, this gets tough. I go to the NGC site and see a book value of $200 for MS66 5FS. That's their highest entry - they don't suggest any MS67 value. Then I follow links to Heritage and look at their auction of an MS67 5FS. Frankly, I like this one better than that, and it sold for $258. So, yes, I still marvel that I paid $325 for the entire set and yet it contains the quality of coins I have been showing. With each passing day I have to appreciate the quality that the original collector achieved. And I appreciate that my LCS tries to keep its stock moving without spending endless hours looking at each and every coin in the set. He said something like "I priced them through 1960 and the rest of the set is free." I actually think he bought it at $300, put it in the case, and turned it over to me the next day to make $25. Works for me!
