1974 I am mystified by the parallel cuts at the 11:00 position of the rim. They are very even and very sharp. Since it was in the Dansco along with other carefully selected coins, perhaps the original collector thought it was a mint error worth preserving. Knowing no differently, I will do the same.
I believe what you are seeing is damage done by the machine that seals the mint packages. It's been a while. This was a topic on CT a few years ago.
That is exactly what I thought it had to be, since its regularity is so mechanical looking. From this we know that this coin was never in a roll, but came from a mint set package. That, in turn, tells us something about the original collector and how he found the coins to build his set. He was not content with circulation coinage so broke apart mint sets. And why not? There were 1,975,981 sets made especially for collectors. And what became of the other denominations? I bet they were in the Roosevelt and Franklin Dansco albums that were in the display case with this one. There’s a couple hundred nickels in the full set. I’ll keep this one, with damage, for the story it might be telling.
Your not alone in this Ron. I have a couple to catch up on and the rest are pretty sparse. Thanks for posting them.
Sit back and enjoy and post when you can. This is all for fun so there's no pressure. I also saw @Lehigh96 at a coin show over the weekend. He says he has a scattering of dates in the 1980's that he can post. Again, great to have company so post when you can. (Even if you have to go all the way back to the beginning...)
All very nice coins. I've put together a complete set with all modern coins coming from mint sets. When I can I'm replacing coins with full step specimens. A few years (ie, 1953) will be difficult. If you only paid $2 per coin then you did well.
Okay, so here comes one of the lowest grade Jeffs in my collection, but it looks cool with the toning. 1976-D
This one came from a Souvenir set. The tick is below the fifth step. Five steps aren't all that rare 1-100 But a sixth step is. Incredibly lustrous, so much so, that I had to photo it as I would a proof.
