Here it is. I'm no expert on toning, but I'm pretty sure it's artificial. I heard something about toning on the edge as an indicator of AT. Is this true? @SuperDave @Paddy54 @micbraun
I have not heard that toning on the edge means AT. I would think the edge can tone just like any other part of the coin. With your ASE I also don't think it's AT. I have seen Eagles tone like that from being in contact with various packaging, similar to that blue cardboard holder your coin originally was in. That doesn't mean a TPG would consider this market acceptable. With PCGS it would be a toss-up while NGC likely would reject it (they have been rejecting many toned ASEs lately).
The reverse looks natural.........I've got some in an Dansco that look similar. The obverse may or may not be natural. @Lehigh96
Ugly, but (probably) natural. The reverse especially looks perfectly natural, which leads me to believe the obverse is also. The edges of a coin can tone just like any other part - they are made of the same metal, after all. The edges are actually *more* likely to tone, because they are often the part in direct contact with the holder (album, cardboard holder, etc, where you want both the obverse and reverse displayed).
I believe that it's NT, however it was caused by the cardboard that it was housed in. The toning isn't appealing to me not the obv. But is market acceptable . This was a set put together after market in Germany correct? That would account for the package causing such advanced toning.
Thank you for the input. I will try to find where I read on CT that edge toning was a sign of AT. It doesn't look as good in hand, and not everyone likes toning, but I find it attractive and I'm sure someone else will whenever I choose to get rid of it. Thanks again!
Could be either to be honest with ya. But it's certainly not my idea of attractive, 'course that's a matter of taste. And the fingerprints all over the obv sure don't help. Nor does the fact that the toning on the rev, at the top anyway, is terminal. Probably not what you wanted to hear but you did ask.
