I recently posted this in another thread but since I only paid $30.00 here it is again. An 1800 Half Cent, the first year of issue for a Draped Bust of this type.
It seems there are virtually no counterfeit Bust halves out there. That’s why I wanted to have a look at the “coin”, to see if it’s close to the real deal or not. It isn’t
One of the most unusual pieces I've been able to acquire. A full size medal / token fashioned after a Geodetic Survey Marker, marking the top of the Washington Monument. It's 50mm dia., serial numbered, lacquered pewter I believe. It's an amazing replica of actual survey bench marks found across the US. Has anybody seen anything similar? Z
It's the actual size, and I'm assuming weight, of an actual bench mark survey marker. I had to have it when I saw it. I've seen many NOAA bench marks in the wild. Z
Here's a "monster" of a medal . . . . 1858 Frankenstein Town Hall Medal - Before / After Fire Engraved by G. Loos. Z
No post in this thread for almost a month. I'll jump start it again. And I'll post something that's neither US, or a coin, so I might get kicked out of the "Under $50" club on principle. This was $44, and I have no idea if that is a good or bad price on it. But the bored look of the woman on the left got me to pull the trigger (she is the personification of Commerce it seems? https://en.numista.com/catalogue/note206031.html)
Figured this thread needed a bump. I wanted to upgrade my Buffalo Nickel album from an old Whitman (a better one with plastic slips, but a Whitman none the less) to a Dansco. I found one at auction that came with 38 slots filled. Most of them were pretty common fair stuff (outside of VF 1924, 1925, and 1928-s) but really liked this 1929-S that came with it. Slightly better date in a slighter better (XF-AU) condition, it stayed in the album with all my other transfers from the Whitman. If you discount the price of what a used Dansco seems to go for (around $25) then I paid just about $50 for the nickels or a little over a dollar a piece. Not too bad.
$8.57 a piece, a little over $50 for the whole lot. Some of my favorites: Most are going in the Dansco. Also came with an AU 1936-D, 1937, and Unc 1938-D. Love the 1935's toning.
While I was competing in an auction back in August, I saw some medals and decided to bid on this one. I won it for under $20
