This one is not a coin, but it turns out to be a decent cherrypick that I did not know about until I got home. VERY surprised. $27.95
Picked these 2 up this morning $90. These two are the nicest I've picked raw ever....the Webster/Van Buren those aren't sratches they are part of the design I never knew existed as most are worned smooth. Also notice the tern " Current" vs Currency on the token. An HT-20 This token was made by the Scovill mfg. co. of Waterbury Conn. Anticpating the election of 1840 in which it was presumed Webster would win and become President . It turned out W.H. Harrison opposed Van Buren and became president in 1841. The hard times token was made after the US economic depression, panicof 1837,and related to Van Buren's projectsfor reformed banking system. Van Buren was the 8th US president. HT-20 is distinguished from the other Van Buren/Webster ship token by having CURRENT on boththe obv.and rev.also on the reverse,HT-20 has the ocean touching it of CREDIT and the pennent ends below the center of the R in Webster. The "Shinplaster" is a term for bills of irresponible banks and private parties. The image of the Phoneix rising from the flames seems to mean paper money was only fit to be burned, and that with its elimination, new life would rise from the ashes. The date Nov. R 1837 , refers to a convention of representatives for leading banks in New York to a fix a date for resumption.
A nice find for me to fill the spot in my nascent budget Capped Bust Half Dollar set - a well worn honest 1814 for $45.44 - I caught two other dates I needed from the same seller for in the $65-75 range for combined shipping, so this comes in nicely under $50.
Like it a lot! I have an 1836 that’s similar Cost me just $25. It’s also O-105 which is R-4 albeit low R-4. Probably no added value but it’s a cool variety with the die lines next to the 50 C.
These both came in at less than half of what I considered a low ball bid. I make many hope for the best bids never expecting to win and seldom do but sometimes... A Woody 1866 hope for a 40 but more than happy with a 35 for $23.49 + $2.25 ship 1858 FE SL should also go 40 but again would be happy at 35 for $26.45 plus $2.25 ship (all sellers pics)
