But not lately, presumably. Thing is, the stuff I bought as a child, back when silver was a couple of dollars an ounce, probably still isn't worth over $50. It was tough building a collection on a fifty-cent-a-week allowance...
Yeah, it was back in the 80's when silver had dropped to $2.85 per ounce. I paid between $32 and $35 each. Got a rash of crap for overpaying. In hindsight, I probably could have bought 50 shares of Apple for the same amount . . . . Z
I have a lot of under $60 Coins that I purchased within the last 2 months. This is not a coin but bullion is close enough.
In the early to mid-80s, $32 to $35 would get you one or two shares of Apple. Of course, those would've split five times since, and you'd now hold 224 shares for each original one. 224 shares of Apple is about $28000 today. But, yay hard assets! (Also congrats on not putting the money into Northern Telecom, or General Motors, or...)
Of course, back then I only paid about $60 for this, but that's slightly more than the maximum for this thread. Z
In the 1980s, 50 ounces of silver or ten shares of Apple would cover a week or two of rent. Today, the silver would cover closer to a month of rent, and the Apple would cover... buying the doggone house outright. (Although not here in Durham, because Apple's getting ready to open a big new facility with 3000 jobs paying solid six-figure salaries, and the real estate market is getting extremely puffy.)
1915 Lucky Penny from Panama-Pacific International Exposition 50mm diameter. Anyone know more about this? My new favorite coin.
Thats a beautiful mid AU cent and a steal for what you paid i wish I could find deals like that on the bay.
Just gotta look harder. I once found an 1858/inverted date half dime in VF for $30. That’s a variety that’s pretty hard to miss. I caught it right after it was listed. A lot of these great buys are gambles on bad pictures as well.
There are several different types; here was a thread that discussed a different design (I haven't seen much info about your specific example but there is some good info in the thread below). https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1030395/1915-medal-panama-pacific-expo-ca-souvenir-penny
A beer medal from the Panama-California exposition in San Diego from 1915. Copper with a likely gold plating.
Since we are on Panama pacific medals. I gave $20 for this one a while back. Still in it's original case. 70 MM and 138g.
$30 MS-62 BN. Probably should've held out for a red, but.....impulse buy, I'm sure some of you can relate.
My best $5.00 purchase of the year. Shipped for that too . . . Z .925 silver, 39mm, Montana Centennial Dollar. Better photos when it arrives.
