I don't believe it's an RPM, but I'd be happy if it was. FWIW, I'm not a variety guy, and a nicely toned 1953-D is a tough coin. Also, the tripling IMO just looks cool...
That is a pretty wild looking mint mark. I can find a couple 53-D RPM's but nothing as pronounced as this quarter. I would post an inquiry in the error threads and see what Paddyman98 or one of the other error gurus have to say. It is certainly worth investigating.
The pronounced tripling cries out die related rather than mechanical doubling. I think they were still adding the MMs to the dies by hand then. I don't think it is a manufacturing error, but rather a die variety.
Alright I always ask when i go to places anybody spent any oldee bills or dollar coins or halves. I was getting gas at shady gas station I was paying amd i asked the cashiee who I talk to often. Hey sokebody came in and bought a black n mild with this. I look and its a silver washington half. My guess they just spent it not knowing true value.
Notice how the tripling has taken away from the normal size of the MM? (which is normally very thick) this is MD.

I sure will, it was listed as VF and I see AU written all over it other than the unfortunate hit on the Rev. I paid as much for the substantially inferior one in my collection. To sweeten the pot I attribute it as a N-5, R.3 making it a Scarce variety
I checked eBay listings out and there is only one attributed 1839 N-5 listed and none in the sold archives. There could be some unattributed though. The same obv. die is used on the N-10 (also R.3) There are two N-10's currently listed but I believe the second one is actually a N-5
They aren't uncommon as a whole as ten of the fifteen known 1839 varieties are Booby Heads, the common varieties for the 1839 Booby Head include N-6 ,N-7, N-9, N-11 and N-13. all R.1's In contrast, N-5, N-10, N-12 and N-14 are scarce. N-15 was unknown during Newcomb's lifetime, and is genuinely rare.
