Apparently i’m Not the top STL based LCS cherry picker.... you set a high bar sir but I’m up for the challenge.
I mean, you might be...but I've found some pretty sweet coins around here, usually at coin shops. Mostly just RPRT (right place, right time.)
Ha ha, i’m Confident i’m Not. RPRT makes all the difference. From the LCS’s in the past couple years my best scores: 1971-S $1 FS-801 paid $5, sold for $3,000 (+20% buyers premium) at the Jan 2018 FUN. 1864 civil war store card paid $0.25, sold for $600 on eBay BIN. 1913-D Lincoln MS-62 (NGC). Paid $0.04 still have it. Plan on keeping.
I think by top sale prices I may be ahead. Best scores: 1875 Seated Quarter PCGS MS64 MPD 1942 Walking Liberty Half DDR PCGS MS67 (hasn't sold yet, though - at PCGS getting the variety added to the slab) 1970 'No S" Roosevelt Dime from an original proof set 1967 Kennedy Half Quadrupled Die Obverse from an original SMS set (now NGC MS66UCAM) China 1932 "Birds over Junk" Dollar But anyway...it's a fun game to play, when it works for ya. Have yet to turn it into a job at a coin shop lol
1886 T-2 IHC $26.60 from a online coin shop in Europe including shipping. Wasn't as nice before a week in acetone and a light swab of mineral oil to keep it from turning green again. I would have saved the purchase pics but I didn't expect this result.
First time in a new coin shop, picked this nice cameo proof Franklin out of a set: (There was also a gorgeously rainbow toned cameo 1956 Proof Franklin I bought, but I'm having a devil of a time capturing the color and it's late. Maybe tomorrow...)
Just arrived - at a reasonable price for an MS64-65: $18.43. However, I would pay a premium for the toning, if I needed to. This is from a reputable dealer and I haven't seen them selling many toned coins like this, so I have reason to believe it is not artificially toned. But, under $20? I'll take that chance. This is my post #2000. Hope I’m not wearing out my welcome quite yet!
At the show yesterday I picked up these two sweet buffalos. An 1935 s/S rpm 004 ,and this super nice 1937 ddo 002. Paid $30 each both are tones very nicely unfortunately my phone cam doesn't shoot great images. So only a few more to hunt down to finishes this short set of varieties. There's a good shot of the three legger...too !
I am following my under-$20 purchase with an under-$5 purchase. I noticed that my 1960 nickel not only has noticeable machine doubling, which I like, but also has a big planchet flaw right on the cheek under the eye, which I like less. (I showed the doubling in another thread.) I sent away for a generic "choice" 1960 for a few bucks to replace it in my album. What I got was pretty nice, and nicer than what I had. The strike and steps have more definition. Overall the coin is more pleasing. Darned if this one doesn't have its own planchet gouge - but this one is on the back under the second U in PLURIBUS. Given the lack of metal for the die to work with, that U did not get filled out and is weak, disappearing into the gouge. I dunno. Maybe I need to actually spend more than $5. Or maybe I can just appreciate this for how it was made.
