I just saw this thread and was going to post my coin, aw heck I will do it anyway in case the quote cuts the photos.

That is one of the nicest SBAs I have ever come across. Scooped it up for about half its 'book value' and I believe its the rarer version of this proof type.

The different Types on the Proof versions had to do with a 'filled' and 'clear' Mint Mark.

The 81-S 'Clear S' seems to be the key to the set

We're never going to get a $1 coin to circulate until we cease
producing $1 bills. I believe Canada stopped several years ago?
    thanks, douglas

This thread very appropriate for me - I decided to focus my collecting towards these and have been looking at eBay to make a start.

@tulipone...go to a few banks around you. Take some cash money and ask if they have any extra dollar coins or buy a few rolls of dollar coins. You search through those and keep what you want and put the rest back in circulation or to a bank to trade for other coins. This is really a great way to start a collection of SBAs. You will be surprised, over time, what quality ones you may find in these.

Maybe when in the US I'll try that. Actually I had no idea they were still in circulation and pretty sure I have never been given any $1 coins in change when on holiday there.

I used to get 3-4 a month when I worked at a convenience store. I even got a 1979 wide rim and a 1981 proof.

The guy at my local convenience store saves any dollar coins he gets for me. Each week i get about 10 bucks worth. Mostly presidentials but also SAC, SBA and Eisenhower. Some people just do not get it.

If anyone has any spare circulated from 79 onwards that are not too beaten up, happy to exchange for notes and pay postage!

As pre Kasia below - have put a request in wanted section.

I'll also go with 1981. Any points for second place?

Nope. It is a 1980.... D. This coin has stunning black and white cameo contrast with deep mirrors, and you'd think it was a proof. But its not.
