    I purchased this Seleucid coin several months ago (already slabbed). The NGC label indicates "marks." I'd like to hear opinions about the possible significance of this notation. There are 3 equal distance claw like marks (short grooves) at 12 o'clock on the obverse side. Are these the result of a jewelry mounting procedure or are they from an ancient coin tracking effort?

    As far as I am aware the only Seleucid 'marks' are the anchor punches which are commonly seen. 20161130_100411.jpg
    I would guess yours was not purposely done for the same reason.

    Congrats beautifull Tet ! imho these tiny marks are insignificant , perhaps testmarks to check for solid silver.
    I dont agree with the 3/5 surface , should be at least 4/5

    Thanks, Andres! The coin was somewhat outside of my collecting field although the Antiochus VII Tetradrachm is included in the David Hendin Biblical Coin Guide. Thanks for posting yours. Yours is, please pardon the expression, museum quality. :)

    O: Diademed head right. R: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ ΕΠIΦΑΝΟΥΣ ΦIΛΑΔΕΛΦΟΥ. Zeus seated left with Nike and sceptre: Control: monogram. SNG Israel 2799. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 15.7g. Diameter: 26 mm.

    Seleukid Empire: Antiochos VIII Epiphanes (120-96 BCE) AR Tetradrachm, Uncertain Mint 116 in Cilicia or Northern Syria (SC 2294.3; HGC 9, 1197c)

    Obv: Diademed head right
    Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ; Zeus Ouranios standing left, holding star and scepter; two monograms to outer left; N in exergue; all within wreath

    Obv: Diademed head right
    Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΦΙΛΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ; Athena Nikephoros standing left; to outer left, monogram above A; A to inner right; all within wreath
