This Variety 5, 1874 With Arrows completes my major variety half dollar type set. Just for background, the major Red Book varieties of LS half dollars are: Variety 1, 1839-1853: No Motto above Eagle, 13.36 grams. Variety 2, 1853 only: Arrows at Date, Rays around Eagle, 12.44 grams. Weight reduced because rising price of silver caused melt value of Variety 1 halves to be greater than face value. Variety 3, 1854-1855: Arrows at Date, No Rays. 12.44 grams. Theory I've heard is arrows were removed due to striking problems but cannot verify that. Variety 1 Resumed with Weight Standard of Variety 2, 1856-1866: The arrows at the date were removed. Variety 4, Motto above Eagle, 1866-1873: 12.44 grams. Variety 5, 1873-1874: Weight increased slightly to 12.50 grams. Variety 4 Resumed (arrows removed) with Weight Standard of Variety 5, 1875-1891: 12.50 grams I will be replacing the 1844 which has been harshly cleaned with two sub-varieties; the No Drapery and With Drapery and in non-details grades.
