My next example is a very fresh set of dies that yielded mirrored surfaces that rival modern day proof strikes. It happens to be my favorite reverse die because it was already failing due to being improperly hardened. All you hard core Morganites know it...:)

I'm not even a diehard Morganite, and yet I agree that that's definitely "dream coin" material.

Even if they failed to bodybag it for the the graffiti. ;)

I some how missed this thread when it was first posted. Been a bit busy driving Uber and Lyft lately.

I've only had a couple that were officially graded as PL, the rest are still raw.

Here's a companion to @Dave Waterstraat's 1883-O he posted. This one has a really good shot at DMPL.

And a nice looking Kennedy that could easily be confused with a proof.

Not US, though I do have some PL Morgans. I've been working on a side set of prooflike Austro-Hungarian coins of Franz Joseph for a few years. I love these. Here is my collection so far:

    Austria 1870 AR 20 Kreuzer
    KM-2212 (1868-1872)
    PCGS MS64 PL

This one is a real stunner in hand with deep cameo. About the size of a 20 cent piece.

    Hungary 1876KB AR Forint
    KM-453 (1870-1879)
    NGC MS61 PL

The forints are the silver dollar equivalent for Hungary in this period, so they are typically found baggy and they start to get pretty scarce around MS63. This isn't the most attractive example, however, it is the only classic forint (1868-1892) that received a PL designation at either NGC or PCGS.

    Hungary 1888KB AR 10 Krajczár
    KM-451 (1870-1888)
    NGC MS64 PL

This coin was used by NGC to represent the KM-451 type in their price guide. It's about the size of a dime.
    10K_1888KB_64PL.jpg

    Hungary 1908KB AU 10 Korona
    KM-485 (1892-1915)
    NGC MS62 PL

In my experience it's very difficult to get NGC to give the PL designation to world gold. I was very pleased to pick up this example with excellent cameo in hand. It's about the size of a quarter eagle.
    1908_10K_62PL_sm.jpg

    Austria 1912 AR Corona
    KM-2820 (1912-1916)
    PCGS MS65 PL

    Equivalent to a quarter dollar.
    1912_65PL_sm.jpg

    Austria 1912 AR Corona
    KM-2820 (1912-1916)
    NGC MS64 PL

This is one of a pair of the first PL coins I got the designation on from NGC. The same date as the PCGS MS65 PL example above. Equivalent to a quarter dollar.
    1C_1912_64PL.JPG

    Austria 1913 AR Corona
    KM-2820 (1912-1916)
    PCGS MS64 PL

    Equivalent to a quarter dollar.
    1913_64PL_sm.jpg

    Hungary 1915KB AR Korona
    KM-492 (1912-1916)
    NGC MS63 PL

I also have an NGC MS64 PL of this date that is a nicer example, but I don't have any good photos on hand to share. Equivalent to a quarter dollar.

The frost on that 20-kreuzer piece is absolutely stunning.

    Ditto the 1913 corona.

Sorry to invade y'alls "mostly-Morgans" thread with our funny lookin' "furrin" stuff. ;)

If I had a PL Morgan to post, I would. It has been 15+ years since I did.

Edit- oh! Just remembered- there are pics in one of my old PCGS Registry sets. Unfortunately that was during my flatbed-scanner-imaging days, so the pictures have their limitations.

I had totally forgotten ever owning this coin, or the fact that I ever had a Morgan grading above MS64.

Alas, you can pretty much give up on seeing much PL contrast in these ancient scans.

It shows you how young the United States is when a Morgan Dollar fits in a Modern Type set...;)
