@Jon Brand That $5 Charlotte is really nice!! It could a "cousin" to that $20 gold piece they found on the "SS Central America"
I still need Charlotte Mint gold, really $$$$$ in MS-63 and better. Could be a lot still MIA out there, after the War. the Confederate government stashed their gold bars, coins, to keep that from the Union forces in 1865.
That 20 piece is unreal. I think it's ms67. Mines just a humble au53. Thanks though! I'm never seen another like mine and was lucky to snag it.
@panzerman Awesome coin !!! Congrats!! Are you sure it is Franz II? According to http://www.holyromanempireassociation.com/list-of-holy-roman-emperors.html "Francis II (German: Franz II., Erwählter Römischer Kaiser) (12 February 1768 – 2 March 1835) was the Holy Roman Emperor, ruling from 1792 until 6 August 1806, when he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire after the disastrous defeat of the Third Coalition by Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz. In 1804, he had founded the Austrian Empire and became Francis I (Franz I.), the first Emperor of Austria (Kaiser von Österreich), ruling from 1804 to 1835" As your coin was minted in 1831 and has the obverse legend "FRANCISCUS I D·G·AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR", which translates to Franciscus I, by the grace of God, Emperor of Austria, in 1831 he was no longer Holy Roman Emperor but Franz I Emperor of Austria. The legend on the reverse HVN·BOH·LOMB·ET VEN·GAL·LOD·IL·REX·A·A· translates to "ever venerable, King of Hungary, Bohemia, Lombardy and Venetia, Galicia, Lodomeria and Illyria". The mintmark A is Vienna as you can see here on page 105: https://books.google.com/books?isbn=0871843080
I've recently gained an appreciation for the fractional gold issues related to Alaska. Most are quite affordable.
