After 300 years of French rule, the Canton of Geneva was returned to the Swiss Confederation in 1814. In 1864, this copper medal was struck to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that reunion. Chris
I just received the 1979 silver Alliance Europeenne Numismatique medal. I have a nice collection of these type of international medals. I will post later . Any information regarding this medal would be greatly appreciated.
That is one of the annual medals that the Alliance Européenne Numismatique (French-speaking Belgium) issues. Every year they honor somebody for his merits, and the name of that person is shown on each medal issued in that year. The Dutch-speaking society is the Europees Genootschap voor Munt- en Penningkunde. Both websites also list those medals, some of which are joint issues and bilingual. Here is the list at the French site, and this is the Dutch list. The latter also describes the designs; usually they pick an older coin for one side. In the case of your piece, the "model" was a jeton by Jan Heymans, at that time the schatbewaarder (treasurer, I think) of Brussels ... Christian
Here are the rest of the Alliance Europeenne/International Numismatique medals including the new one from today. It is not easy finding any information on these medals other than pictures but I really enjoy them. I had them posted under Belgium but I believe this thread should be their home.
As almost everything in Belgium now, the associations are region and language specific: Seems that until 1981 the AEN in French-speaking Wallonia and the EGMP in Dutch-speaking Flanders issued, by and large, annual bilingual medals. Since 1982 they have been two separate series. By the way, both the AEN and the EGMP sell "leftover" medals according to what I saw at their websites. Guess that offer is primarily for but not limited to members of the local clubs. The AEN provides an e-mail address for that purpose; the EGMP has an order form ... Christian
Here are some more......Photos courtesy of Bob Campbell..... Note the earthquake damage on the high rise buildings. LOL!
Thanks! These were the only years (1969-1982) that the ANA produced 3-medal sets for the annual conventions. I became interested in them in 2005 when I spotted the 1969 set with Frank Gasparro's rendition of Libertas Americana. It took about 18 months to acquire all the others except the 1981. It took another 6-1/2 years to find the 1981. The mintage of each of the sets varies from 300-500. Chris
