Here's my most recent Buffalo. Only the third I've bought. And two old Jeffersons I recently swapped 2x2s on and took new pics.
Also, a small batch I found on eBay recently. Won the lot for under $8. I would have gladly paid $8 for the 63 alone, the other two are just a bonus
One day I walk into a pawn shop. Looking at a small stash of coins he had. I pick up a bag of six Jefferson and a no date Buffalo. How much ya want for the nickels? $10 he says. Sold. Here are two of the nickels I bought that day. I kept the best of the six in a circulation folder I am putting together. I have 3 more to grade. I took the worst ones and used it on a free NGC offer. Yes they were all 1939-D.
Wow, that is quite the score! I paid over 6 times that for a single raw 39 D reverse of 38 on eBay a couple years ago. It ended up grading MS 66 which was nice.
Pawn shop Wow. Most owner know what to look for on coins Especially. But this one you got. Over on a pawn shop. Great $10.00 Score.
I'm a little confused. You kept the best one raw and put it in a coin folder and then had the lower quality nickels graded? Can I ask why?
Everyone asks me the same question. It's for my grandkids to find. I see so many stories of people finding grandpa's coin folder with run of the mill circ coins. I want them to go, "look what grandpa left us". I had folders of coins left to me and most all of it was low grade circ. As far as the pawn shop not knowing about the coins was quite baffling. Honestly, though I don't find a lot of coins in pawn shops. Most of them don't know anything about coins. Except gold ones. Then they want double market value. I could go on about other things I have found at the pawn shops. I have similar deals to the nickels with other coins. We have so many pawn shops it would take me a couple weeks to search them all, once.
As far as protection goes, folders don't come close to slabs, which I'm sure you know. And I would think the grand kids would be just as excited about finding encapsulated coins. I think a single coin being in a slab and having all that protection means it's a special coin, rather than being in a folder, loose with a bunch of other coins.

I have thought about it. Preserving the numismatic and monetary value of the coin would be better. I'll find a lesser grade hole filler. Now not to derail the thread too much. Here is a couple bad photos of an 1830 EF-40 half dime. Unfortunately, it graded details. Notice the big X on the obverse.
