Not as pretty, and definitely not an official issue - in fact it is a privately minted coin that the mintage of which actually lost money for the minter - a man by the name of Henning.
1867 3c Nickel missing bridge of nose on obverse and most of the ribbon ends on reverse. I can’t decide if it was severe die polishing, harsh cleaning, or a counterfeit.
Sometime I will post my blackbox collectables - paper money, coins etc. I have a significant number for study.
I know, take it out of the 2 x 2 to photograph it. But didn't want to destroy a perfect holder at the moment just for a slightly better photo.
Fetching those pix made me realize that I do not presently own any Shield or Liberty nickels in my current collection (though I do have some relatively inexpensive ones in my vestpocket store inventory). I shall have to rectify that eventually. Maybe get a nice proof Libnick. Not sure if I'd go proof or MS or circ on the Shield nickel.
Nice to see this thread get some action. All very nice coins, but I am a sucker for a nice toner. I’ll bet that 13 and 65 are knock outs in hand.
Thanks. That 1913 Buff is a bit of a monster. The 1965 SMS is rather subtle, but I like it- and it only cost me 15 bucks. I'm working on a toned 1965 SMS set with TrueViews (since that is my birthyear). So far I have the cent- (speaking of monster toners!), that nickel above, and the half (which is kind of ho-hum). Still need the dime and quarter.
Well I wish you the best of luck on putting that set together. Aside from a few odds and ends, my nickel collection doesn’t go past 1964, but that will probably change eventually.
