I scored big on GC last night with this coin. I looked it up before bidding and saw that it is the rarer “small H” variety. From looking at completed EBay sales I can see that the attribution on the slab is indeed correct, and at less than $60 out the door it looks like I got a steal.
You did very well. I figure your coin is worth $400 Canadian dollars = $331.40 U.S. dollars. From the chart this coin keeps going up in value too. link: https://www.bing.com/search?q=400 USD to CAD&FORM=S00037&filter=ufn:"USD" aid:"de79675229366a3bf9c00cb0b4f461a4" sid:"CAD400" cpair:"CAD400" dstr:"" currency:"1"
I see that an AU58 sold on eBay for around $100, and an MS63 for $150. 400USD sounds high but either way I could easily sell it for more than I paid. I could even call it a “cherry pick” if the variety hadn’t been written right on the slab.
Well, you might have been the only person to have been paying attention, though. I remember "finding" a 1937 D 3-legged Buffalo Nickel in a torn up blue Whitman folder for my auctioneer boss. It had the reverse side out. It was circled in ink. It was labelled "3-legged." The guy who sold it didn't notice. The guy who bought it didn't notice. The guy who inventoried it didn't notice. If I hadn't noticed, my boss would have sold the book for a few dollars. Came back as an NGC XF45, I believe. Then the auctioneer sold it at an auction for about $200 lower than an absentee bid I left with him...because he wasn't paying attention. Paying attention is sometimes ALL you need to do.
I can't find this 1980 proof polar bear commemorative dollar in the KP catalog. I see the KM 128 for the specimen type but it does not the have a listing for the proof type or the proof set (starts 1981 in the catalog). Same for the canoe dollar KM120.1, no proof line (starts in 1981) for 1980. Actually none of these are listed in proof. Maybe coinsandcanada.com.
I was looking at my Charlton standard catalogue Canadian coins 2016 70th edition and I would assume the values would even be higher in the latest edition ? The $400 was in Canadian dollars = $331 in US dollars. Ether way you did very well on it.
From the misc foreign box at the Florida LCS this winter Back home in Central New York now checking out my bounty
I enjoy Canada coins. I keep them all. I get all of them in change(Buffalo NY here) or roll hunting. Found a 37 nickel the other day. Thanks for the showing. We hardly get to see any of those.
Yes, the “H” (Heaton) mint mark is of the small variety. The large variety is much larger and so they are easy to tell apart.
This one was listed as VF by my LCS. However it looks more like high AU, minimum, in hand. My pictures don't show it but there is luster and no wear; but I am not an expert in these small silvers.
Canada 1899 10 cents Canada 1910 "10" (50) cents Canada 1910 10 cents Canada 1919 10 cents Pretty sure all these coins have been cleaned, which is very annoying. Cool coins nonetheless.
An out of collar broadstrike error. Not an off-center. 1968 Canada caribou silver quarter. I saw this on Ebay and had to bid on it. I won the auction for $42. I think I did very well seeing that you hardly ever see these for sale. I pounced on it. Sellers pics...
Picked up this really nice 1950 50 Cent piece today - surfaces look prooflike. Has the "Full Design" lines through the 0 in the date, plus what I believe is the "Hearing Aid" clash marks in the ear: Happy to hear if anyone has any thoughts/information on this coin.
