well... I am still happy with my 1947 maple leaf purchase. as I said before... I am doing the caribou quarters toned. I enjoyed seeing your caribou quarter collection. Is/are your coins safe in that plastic album ? I am assuming it is archive safe plastic. I am a little envious of your 1938 MS-62 grade. I have not gotten that coin yet. please tell me it's current value. what are the other tough key dates you have ? 1939, 1949 dot after 7, 1948, the jump in value for the 1938 from MS-63 to MS-65 is crazy high. what is the lastest year version of the Charlton catalog ?

There is a new Charlton catalogue every year. The information for the 2017 edition will be just about done in June/July. Every year there is a different denomination or denomination and Monarch is the back of the book for 40-50 pages of varieties of that denomination. I'm not sure what next year's is.

ahaha => dude, apparently you just paid $40 too much for your last Canadian coin because you didn't have this catalogue (spending another $12 on a catalogue that has far more info regarding the coins that you're currently collecting seems like a no-brainer) ... but hey, it's totally up to you if you want to keep rollin' the way that you're rollin' (oh, and I'm not sure why you think Canadian dollars are less accurate than any other dollars?)

I will buy that catalog. my question was how accurate are the values in this catalog versus real market values ??? some coins do get more money for pretty toning and no catalog is gonna list that price correct ? toning is subjective in pricing and is different for each individual. some will pay more some will pay less.

Sure, but you thought it was worth $250 when it is really only listed at $85 ... c'mon man

Oh, and I'm not sure how accurate the Krause values are compared to the Charlton numbers? (I'm assuming that Krause gets their info from the Charlton catalogue, since it is the equivalent of the Red Book for Canadian coins, right?) ... isn't that what the states uses for their official coin values? (or do they use Krause numbers over the Red Book numbers?)

=> good job buying the catalogue (oh, and that Colonial Acres site has some pretty cool coins as well ... they are basically like buying straight from the Royal Canadian Mint ... they seem to buy all of the mint's stock) ... not too many super buys, buy they also won't try to rip you off (basically you'll be buying everything pretty close to book-value, but they have almost every coin in their inventory => great for filling holes in your collection ... but maybe not the best for a dude collecting toned coins?)

... go to their 25 cent area and take a walk through their stuff (oh, and I don't get a cut for introducing new dudes to their site) ... honest

    ;)

I never said it was worth $250. I do not know where that came from ???? the redbook is not good for current values at all. I think the people use "grey sheets" are more accurate for current up to date prices.

Krause values can be way off compared to real life markets. depends what coin it is. common coins are pretty accurate. rarer coins not so much. Ok so I paid $40.00 over what you thought my last coin was valued at. not to big of a loss on my part. my other Canadain coins have been close to market value. some a little more for toning. I am still learning Canadian values. take it easy on me Man "C'mon". I will ask for your price opinion on my future purchases on Ebay.

Hmmm, well maybe I brought $250 into the conversation? => anyway, the 1947 non-Maple Leaf is worth $250 ... your Maple Leaf version is listed at $85 (but it is toned, so you paid what you thought it was worth to "you" => I 100% get it)

... oh, and if you find a 1947 dot in MS64 then it would be worth $2,250

Regardless, I think most people that collect Canadian coins probably use the Charlton catalogue as a fairly sound guide (I don't want to preach it's accuracy compared to any other world catalogues, but again, I don't think you can go too wrong having that baby in your coin-library)

=> have a great night, S-Yoda (I like your toned tastes ... very cool)

    cheers.gif

I have 1 more question for you Stevex6. in my Krause catalog the highest grades for caribou quarters only go as high as MS-63 and MS-65. does the Canadian catalog show all the MS #'s (MS--64) ??

It varies depending upon the coin-era ... but for the years that we're talking about 1930's & 1940's they have the following categories:

    VG-8, F12, VF20, EF40, AU50, AU55, MS60, MS63, MS64, MS65, MS66, SP63, SP65

Charlton prices are full retail. You should be able to buy anything 62-63 or less for about 70% of Charlton by shopping around and waiting and sell it for about 50-60%. Charlton is, in my opinion, much more current than Krause. There will always be a premium on high-grade high-luster coins. A book can not tell you what the surface is like, nor can an Ebay photo. If you are into toning and blemish-free surfaces, buy a coin by having it in-hand. Rarities or scarcities in higher grade may very well be worth (and sell) more than what's listed in ANY guide.
