The 1880 large cents were struck in the amount of 400,000 coins, largest quantity for the Victoria series of 1865-1896 (the smallest yearly total was the 1885 at 40,000 pieces). The 1880 cents come in three varieties. The two Round 0 (in the date) varieties are Round 0, Level, and Round 0, Low. The Round 0, Low is a noted rarity in the higher Mint State grades but in circulated grades there is only slight differentiation between the prices of the two Round 0 variants until AU or so.

The Oval 0 variety is the third and last variety for 1880, very rare in any grade. This XF40 PCGS-certified example is another piece I bought last fall and only recently photographed. I personally think it is a Choice XF but am quite happy with its appearance regardless! PCGS has graded precisely four Mint State examples of the Oval 0: one in MS63 Brown, one in 64 Red Brown, and two (or the same piece twice) in MS65 Red Brown; these Red Brown Mint State coins are surely incredible pieces and almost certainly tightly held in strong hands.

Our "XF40" shows a good deal of red remaining, and a wealth of detail and eye appeal for the grade. PCGS shows 3 in XF40 with 10 finer, ranging up to the MS63 Brown already mentioned. Haxby lists this grade at $875; CCN Trends lists it at $1,000. Enjoy!

Best Regards, :hail:

George

1880 Newfie Large Cent Oval 0, XF40 PCGS, Key Date
