Wow!! That '85-CC GSA looks like it is a 66-66+ with really nice looking semi-PL fields! Is it ungraded? I'd have that one off to NGC tomorrow if not. What's the story on it?
It's my pops coin. He's had it since the GSA sales. Grading that one isn't on his list of priorities right now. He's mainly sending in CAC subs for his purchases many moons ago.
A recent addition A VAM 53, the most common VAM in this series. This VAM is easily spotted because of the unique diagonal die crack running through the Mint Mark Learn to VAM Morgans a great hobby!
This coin shows the importance of learning about Morgan Dollar VAMs. I picked this one up on eBay last week for a nominal fee because the seller did not bother to check the VAM. It is an MS 61 with some nice remaining luster. VAM 5 in this series has the last 1 doubled, and a doubled mint mark. But when you are searching for them on the internet there is a little way to cheat. This is the only coin in the series with hair curls nearly polished out. Once you spot that then checking the other two characteristics are secondary.
Pretty much so. I have picked a lot of them in different grades looking for that one curl feature and so far it has not failed. Hopefully many more Morgan collectors will join in on VAMing. It is the next logical step to becoming a student of the Morgan Dollar.
