Good to know, thanks! I'll give it a go when it arrives, probably will still send it to NGC anyways since I have 4-5 others going there already in the next month and the slab looks beat up and hopefully (haven't seen it in person) has a chance at moving up. Even though moving up probably isn't a big deal with an 80-S and doubt I sell this one ever anyways if it's half as cool as it looks in pictures.
I would leave it as is and maybe send to CAC as PL standards were much more loose back then than today and you risk it just missing it and coming back from NGC without the designation
I was actually looking at CAC membership this morning and looks like it's closed for awhile. Am I able to submit coins through a LCS to CAC potentially? Never owned a PL coin, are you able to even tell if it's graded PL accurately while it's in the slab or does it basically need to be cracked out to know?
I could tell whether it would or has a damn good chance, if I had it in hand. However, with photos, even those that know PL Morgan's can't say for certain if it meets today's standards though. The holder itself is collectable and adds value. I wouldn't crack it even if it would cross. There's no reason to lose the rattler value. I can submit to CAC and am thinking of sending some morgans off soon. PM me if you'd like to piggy back on my submission.
Yeah I figured with pictures it wouldn't be possible, just wondering if once it's in hand it's doable or if the slab itself would prevent accuracy. Sounds good. Appreciate the offer, I'll wait til it comes in and see how it looks in person. Thanks!
I'd have to check but I think that's the vam that technically got me started in a round about way. I was sure I had a new O/S that was an 1884. It was clear as day to me lol. Only looked at the mm which I really thought I saw a faint crossbar on. That was the first coin I sent to JB. I was so sure I hit a new mega find. When it came back I was bummed but it did have a cool radial die crack that I didn't even notice lol.
Don't crack it out. I am with Cascade and doubt it will get a PL grade today. And it really doesn't make a difference if the slab says 63PL or 64PL... keep it as it is ;-)
appreciate your guys help, this site makes me do way less stupid stuff than I would on my own lol Especially since it's such a common date/mint in MS, really not a lot of reason to crack and resubmit Hopefully I can get the electronic toothbrush trick to work now
This worked perfectly thanks again for the tip! You guys nailed it. I don't think it would hit PL today. The obverse is PL for sure but the reverse doesn't hit the mark IMO (but to be fair the reverse slab is really scratched up and not all that clear so who knows). Definitely not worth cracking out though especially being an 80-S. It's a beautiful coin though, the toning is amazing and aside from a couple hits on the cheek and eyebrows it's super clean, very minor hits in the fields and beautiful strike. It's in nicer shape than a couple of my 65s, love it.
