As collectors mintage is usually the key to "key" coins. Whats sometimes strange low mintages dont necessary mean the coin would enjoy key status. Years ago I collected gold ,silver coins ,and bullion. I recall a few coins I had aquired from Israel that had less than 25 minted.....a series they minted that were related to old testament bible stories. These were struck in rose 18k -24 kt gold, limited to < 25 pcs! Hind site is 20/20 as I sold off about 24 ounces of gold coins years ago cashing in on doubling and sometimes tripling my investment. Just looking this moring on ebay wow! Some of these are now 3 to 6 k coins! Now remember mintages in the US vs world mintages are like night and day depending on the countries needs, a mintage of 25,000 pcs. In the US is low, but in another nation it maybe possible its their largest mintage ever. So show us your lowest minted coin, no matter what country minted it. Post its mintage and a little bit about the specimen.
This is one of only two examples known. I pulled it from an uncleaned lot I was working with. It is listed in RIC as follows: Constantius II, AE follis, Cyzicus. AD 335-336. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with two standards between them. Mintmark star SMKA. RIC VII Cyzicus 113 var (officina); notinric 7cyz113. Rated R4. Contributed by David Zachmeyer, Feb. 2020
This little 2007 1/20 oz Libertad just 3500 were minted. The 2007 1 oz coin was just 200,000 as the demand for siller bullion wasnt in demand as todays . I believe that @Furryfrog was gifted the 1/4 oz 2007 it to as well had a very low mintage as well.
I was going to post this one...Seems that @Paddy54 just posted her sister This is our lowest mintage coin and she is a beaut!
I posted in another thread this morning the two special matte finish Jefferson's nickels. The 1994 & 1997 are the 2 lowest of the series.
Not extremely low mintage but fairly low 63,000. I have a couple examples of this year, this one is the lower grade one. 1825 Half Cent.
US coin - actually a pattern: The cupro-nickel example of the 10 cent pattern utilising the large cent obverse. 24 examples were reported minted. Minted for circulation: 19K examples were minted in the last year of the Carson City Mint in Nevada. I have much scarcer foreign, another time though.
Love me some of those 1994/1997 SP Jeffersons, although it's a shame none of mine I already submitted have received a 70. Never seen one in an Accugrade holder, though. Thanks for sharing.
Well Ben the Accugrade was purchased because of that reason. LoL great minds lol. Buy the slab he he... And yes most grade a 69 and both suffer from what I believed to be a reaction from the wash and the package. . You very seldom see a 94 or 97 matte that hasn't turned that crazy tone....mostly on the reverse... some like it.... myself I like a nice bright specimen if I could find one. Every one I've seen has that tone.
I feel like I have a decent amount that are pretty "white" - including most of the ones that are already graded - but yeah, many of them I've picked up after sending in that first batch started turning that light caramel brown, a few went as far as adding that violet/maroon to the color palette. It's too bad they weren't made of silver, I've had a few of those commemoratives with some nice rainbow colors from the OGP.
I agree Ben silver platchets would of been special. What gets me is value....one would think a low mintage high grade coin would be a no brainer to hold a better price point.
Especially those 1994 sets - you can get them for $25-30 each if you are patient enough. The silver dollar has somewhere between $20-24 in silver in it (depending on spot) plus there is a $2 bill. That's what I call a no lose situation. I'd buy as many of those sets as I could get my hands on at those prices.
Yup there are 4 of each in the safe....same reason. Plus the The 97 Botanical garden as well the Jefferson tone nicely a nice rainbow tone ...and the the 97 makes extra nice a perfect gift for the woman collector. I canot tell you the appreciation I've received over the years by putting one in an airtight and gifting it to a female friend......they love the rose.
A middle of the road mintage for the Matte Proofs at 2,172. By far the lowest mintage coin in my collection. I’m a big fan of the woodie look on Lincolns and couldn’t pass this one up.
One of my favorite Caribbean islands....I've made land fall there 6 or better times...back in 76 college days, I went for spring break....even got to meet Bob Marley at the Pelican club in Mo bay. I've been all over the island except Kingston ,Spanish Wells, and Port Royal. These towns have always been full of pirates....not the place for a white male tourist. Ocho Rios, Mo bay, Negril, Blue mountains, and took a train up to the mountains, and rode horses back down the mountain jungle. My favorite Jamacian saying...."Soon come! " Translated means that I plan to hook up or visit you....when soon come maybe 15 minuites....maybe 15 hours your on island time......so soon come!
I have found some of the $2 stars from the 1994 sets (and at this point I'm concerned we are hijacking the OP's thread about low-mintage coins) but I don't believe I've kept them as I don't collect much currency and I'm happy to put the funds from those bills into discounts on coins I do want to keep. (By my current count, that's 40 of the 1994's and 17 of the 1997's.)
