I first posted this coin about 7 years ago, so I must have bought it just before Christmas 2016. Here's the image from then. I don't think it was really this yellowish - my photos have improved since then! I have had occasion to take more recent photos, which revealed the coin in this condition. If you look at the expanded version, you can see what looks like varnish or some other crud. See the inside of the ear, the front edge of the forehead, and at the rim above and below LIBERTY. I was thinking of looking for a replacement, but 1924-S coins are notoriously weakly struck and this is actually a pretty good example. I decided to see if I could undo whatever happened to it. First, I rinsed it in distilled water. I put the water into a small container, gently held the coin, and swished it around vigorously. Occasionally I changed my grip to make sure every part of the surface was equally rinsed. Then I rinsed it in acetone, using the same method, then finally xylene. This took about 10 minutes altogether. I took some more pictures and it looked like there was still some crud on the left wheat stalk. I took it back to the lab (my workbench in the basement) and gave it about 100 more swishes each in the water, acetone, and xylene. Enough talk, here's the results. Full resolution photos What do you think? Restored, or Ruined?
There are some things, like that ear, that are hard to un-see once your attention is drawn to them. Not to worry, it’s the same ear that was always there before. It’ll go back to normal in a day or so.
Hi Thad!!! Glad to see you have enlarged your availability of products!!! I am just about out! Belated "Merry Christmas and happy year". They are the best! Jim
Agreed. I just ordered some VerdiCare last night. I’ve got some pennies that need a little affection. I went through Wizard Coin Supply, but I see you can buy directly from https://verdi.care. Yep, a shameless plug for a good product from a fellow CoinTalk contributor.
Sorry, I can’t drum up any interest in varieties. I do have large / small date versions of 1960 and 1982 (because the album has holes for them), but no 1922 plain or 55 doubled die. Any other varieties are purely accidental. Send me a few and I’ll add them to the post…
HAHAHAHA....yeah, I get it, variety fatigue is real. That said, the fun is finding one in the wild. I have never bought any of them except for the CLAM proofs, and those I found unattributed in gov proof sets after 20 years of looking.
Large dates but the 1960D's are about equal in number between the large and small dates. It's the 1960P SD you're hunting.
REAL lucky, I found 2 of the 1999 WAMs just a few months apart after searching tens of thousands of coins. These are TRULY rare!!!!
