I'm always looking at 1972 Proof sets hoping to find one of the rare Double Die cents. Every once in a while you think "Maybe?", but no.... The "N" kinda looks doubled or otherwise somehow weird / messed up, but the rest of the legend is normal. Today I found another & it just hit me, The "N" has been re-engraved! I'm sure everyone knows about this, but it is a new realization for me. Kind of interesting, think I'll start saving them rather than dropping them in rolls. Sorry about the photos... just the best I can do at this time.
Some extreme DDD in the last 8. I think your obverse photos are accentuating the spots too much. In my experience, these darn 88-D's are either spotted, bubbled, LDS, weakly struck and/or beat up with hits every where. I have searched thousands of them, may be near tens of that - 99.9+% went back to circulation. It's just a garbage issue....even in mint sets.
I'd like to think I accentuated the luster this one is unbelievable, and yes I hate the spots, I think I rolled the coin for later.
In my $1300 of wheats, I had 2100 rolls of 40/50's, 229 rolls of 30's, 128 rolls of 20's, 109 rolls of teens and 73 rolls of steel cents. I found 1 09S, 45 09VDB's, 13 10S, 10 11S, 11 12S, 12 13S, 2 14D, 7 14S, 23 22D, and 6 24D. Plus a multitude of the other years. Great fun. I doubt I will search thru the 40/50s.
I had to go look at my 88D pictures. You can see I sacrificed strike in exchange for dies state and the lack of spots and bubbles. When these are weakly struck, you get those "scratchy" surfaces on the obv devices. They look way worse in photos than in hand. (Right obv field mark is on the airtite holder. ) Finding one of these without bubbles is nearly impossible!
The recent sales on this page are an interesting study, esp. the 68RD's: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1988-d-1c-rd/3105
Time to find a new Bag. you have been at this for a while, and have taken notice of your persistence. Fweh good run! There are a few in those years that are a lot of fun. One is the inverted MM http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/1946SIMM001.htm
These early zinc's can be hard to grade, my determining factor is luster, followed by the spots, most of them are riddled, especially the low relief.
