To my surprise, it was possible to photograph this through the original plastic proof packaging. I'll post one tomorrow that's been freed of that.
It may indeed look that way. The mint sets have red and blue edges along the plastic, and the proof set does not. This one is clear. Now as to that ding in the obverse at the 10:00 position, that's pretty intriguing since this is a proof that never left its original package. Ouch! To add a little interest, here's another ungraded proof that arrived today. It's toned down a bit for the photo, but it is very reflective and very red. Does anyone have a opinion on whether this is a Cameo?
1939 had two proof types satin and mirror. I picked up a satin for $18.00 with Robec when I visited with him and we went to a coin shop. The satin has less mintage numbers then the mirrored.
Thanks for the link. With those pictures I could imagine this being a cameo. I see PCGS has only graded one 1939 proof cameo. It's at PF65 and sold at Heritage for $2585, about 20 times what I paid for this one. As much as I would like a windfall I didn't see anyone bidding thousands for this! Here's a different 1959 proof (without the cellophane packaging).
I thought i had a photo of the reverse, unfortunately the camera didnt quite catch the colors. It is one that has a rainbow like shine. Just curious do those hold any added value?
Thank you I appreciate the quick reply I saw a video on YouTube that really piqued my interest and I've been collecting about a month now pretty cool things but most recently 8 Indian Head pennies in a roll which I thought was really cool
8 IH's in one roll, not bad! Be very careful with YouTube - it's like a 50/50 proposition - you have to figure out which 50 is true & which is just BS.
Yes I have to agree I came across video from coin op which just kind of got me interested in collecting in general I didn't realize just how much there was out there if you have an open eye, but there definitely are some interesting things to find out there
Well, CT can be an excellent resource. There are many specialists here, with excellent insight (read: knowledge) & there are many excellent links provided.
Oh absolutely, I have found the most valuable information browsing many different topics and comments in this site, just out of curiosity do you have any advice on searching, for example the only thing I've really done is searching coin rolls from different banks
