Maurice is an important yet underrated figure in Byzantine history. Maurice was the author of the military treatise, Strategikon. The Strategikon would be the cornerstone of the Byzantine army’s strategy for most of the empire’s existence and marked a departure from the earlier tactics of the Roman Imperial legions. Maurice’s deposition and murder by the usurper Phocas in 602 AD would plunge the empire into war with Sassanid Persia.
